March 27 Bonus: Vietnam motorbikes, Yankee Station

Sanya cancelled so it's a sea day

Bad weather and a late departure have caused the captain to cancel our stop in Sanya China.  We're happy about this as it will put us into Hong Kong at noon rather than 5pm tomorrow.  We'd much rather have the time in HK than Sanya.

So here's some more motorbike pictures, this time from the north end of Vietnam.

 OK, technically not a motorbike.

Six passenger minivan version of the motorbike

Thanks

I did not do much research before putting in deposit for 2018 Oceania world cruise, but after reading your blog I think I made the right decision.

I have lot of questions about how you did the research about each port, how you selected excursions, how you compare your excursion experience with folks who did independent tours, how much it cost to go to Agra/Taj Mahal etc. etc. but I also noticed the link to cruise critic blog. I will continue to follow your blog and will read cruise critic blog to get more details.

Thanks again .....

Hi,
I did the research for this trip from a wide variety of sources. Tourist boards for cities, tripadvisor.com, cruisecritic.com, were all very helpful. I particularly like frommers.com for their city walks, info on what to see and how to get there, fodors.com is also excellent as is some of the other travel sites. I also looked for hop on hop off bus tours in every city and usually chose those to use.

also I looked at what O is offering and decided if it is too painful to do on our own, such as get to Hanoi or Taj Mahal, and signed up for shorex.

Having never been to the African or Asian ports we selected the ship's excursions to make sure that we would see what we wanted to see, and would be assured that we would get back to the ship on time. The ship will wait for those coming back late on their shorex, but not for independent tours. Others who have been to those continents feel comfortable planning their own tours.

Go to O's webpage and select an Around the World and then click on "hotel/overland", then you'll see "pre cruise", "post cruise" "overlands", click on "overlands"and you might get what appears to be a blank page, but scroll up and look at the right hand corner and it might say "more hotel info" Click on that and you should be able to get info on that overland tour, cost, and itinerary.

i just checked to see if i could send you the url for 2017 overland page and it is not appearing yet. Ask your TA when is the 1st possible day to sign up for them and do so then...some are restricted by number so the sooner you sign up the better chance you have to get what you want. Also be sure to sign up for the "freebies" offered by O, and don't assume you get them just because you're on the cruise. You must actively sign up for them. hope this helps, cynthia (cbb on ccritic thread)

Dave/Cynthia,

Thanks. By the way, I am going for 2018 not 2017, still have some time. Guess I should concentrate on upcoming trip for summer 2016 and plan something for summer 2017 (last year my daughter is with me before we send her to college).

Thanks for the resources list and I will follow your advice and will not make any assumptions although web page just said I am registered for four excursions without much details. Recently somebody mentioned Tom's port guide on CC forum .... http://www.tomsportguides.com/port-guides.html

Thanks again for taking the time from your trip to take us with you. I like your writing style and guess you have a very nice camera and are experienced photographer. Not everybody will think of taking Taj Mahal pictures with another "Mehrab" in the front. I would have asked about transition from IBM to history teacher but will keep quite for now and will let you enjoy the trip. Will keep reading the log.

Regards,

i'm cynthia, the history teacher, and he's dave the computer geek. We're both amateur photographers although he understands the science behind cameras and their settings....i just put mine on "sport" if i'm on a bus, fast boat, train, etc and "P" most of the rest of the time, although i have begun to be aware of the light settings.

The pictures posted here are almost 50/50 between mine and his!

Tom's port guide is good, but he didn't cover the ports i needed to research at the time. Whatsinport.com is one david used for locating ports on maps and i used for some information...another good place to start your research.

i use a nikon D5300 and his is Nikon D7100. I understand you're on 2018 but thought perhaps i could find some ports you share with 2017 so you could see where to get Overland Excursions info using that webpage citation.

Have fun with your daughter. We took our kid on a raft trip down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon the summer after high school graduation; it was awesome!

I am also enjoying and following your write up on CC forum. I think I am seeing two distinct writing styles. Being a history professor give you an edge in enjoying and researching the culture.

We had number of local overnight raft trips when kids were young and two week Grand Canyon raft trip was on to do list before I got sick; cruise is the only option I have now. Back issue is deterministic and I do get advance notice but auto immune hit me on a very short notice. Been cursing for years now, if I don't feel at least 80% in am, I simply stay on the cruise .... I have three kids and two of them are on their own now and we are stuck (I am sure my wife will think stuck is strong word here) with summer vacations for another 18 months :-) We used to be very tight financially before mortgage payoff and college tuition and our vacation was to put kids in Van/SUV and drive. We live in NJ and couple of time we took a month off during summer and just drove to west coast of course making stopover to national parks in between. Relocation will also be on table once my daughter goes to college as we grow older winter gets longer but we also love current home and do forget about winter once spring start. Another option is to travel during winter time and world cruise is first step towards that goal.

As for photo quality, so far I was very happy with phone camera but seeing your posts here I think we can do much better. Thanks for the information and enjoy the trip.
