June 7 Honolulu
We have four days in a row at Hawaiian ports. Today's call is in Honolulu. Since we've now come around to the leeward side of the islands, we have clear skies and sun galore.
Diamond Head as we enter Honolulu harbor.
We docked right at the Aloha Clock Tower.
Bunkering in progress. This is the process by which bunker fuel is piped into the ship.
We took a WWII ship's excursion that visited some of the locations that were important on December 7, 1941. The Home of the Brave tour was very good and informative, although we thought the guide was just a little too conspiracy theory prone.
Punchbowl Cemetery
Fort Shafter, home of the 4-star general that commands the USAPAC.
Explanation of the symbol: The upper stars are the Little Dipper and the North Star, while the lower stars are the Southern Cross, The arrow is the drive across the Pacific in WWII. Also, there are 12 stars total, clustered as 1, 7 and 4 stars that can be combined to read 12/7/41. Or so the guide said.
Wheeler Field, an Army Air Force base in 1941. The Japanese bombed this flight line. Pictures weren't allowed while on the base, so this is from the van while driving by outside. This is still an active Army Air base, now servicing helicopters.
Schofield Barracks. This is Quad C which had a cameo appearance in From Here to Eternity with a Japanese Zero strafing soldiers in the quad. The soldiers in the foreground are servicing a mortar.
Schofield Barracks is the home of the 25th Infantry Division, the Tropic Lightning. We visited the museum.
Wall art in the men's bathroom of the museum.
Practicing for a review ceremony
Art deco architecture at the base gate
Helicopters flying above the Arizona Memorial and the USS Missouri.
Monument to the submarines lost during WWII.
King Kamehameha statue in downtown Honolulu.
Home of the Brave has a small museum of military artifacts. This genuine WWII Army Jeep restored by the Home of the Brave was used in the movie Pearl Harbor.
WWII Harley Davidson

We went to Pearl Harbor in the afternoon, which turned out to be a mistake.
Couldn't visit the Arizona Memorial. You have to arrive early while everything is still calm -- they stopped around 11am today. The tour normally gets here at 6:30am, but since we didn't dock until after 8am, our guide tried to get us to the Arizona in the afternoon. Fortunately, we had seen it when we visited Hawaii in 2004.Helicopters flying above the Arizona Memorial and the USS Missouri.

I really enjoyed the detail journey you have summed up for us. Thank you so much for that. Though I think there are few things that needed to be mentioned and they are given in this website, active Hawaii army base.
