June 6 Hilo Hawaii
It's been awhile since I posted, but it's been awhile since we've visited a port. We spent four days sailing north from French Polynesia before arriving back in the USA -- Hilo, Hawaii.
On the way north we crossed the equator for the 6th time, and had our fourth visit from King Neptune. This was the second appearance of Neptune in his panda incarnation. With a Kermit brooch.
One of these is Assistant Cruise Director Wil. The other is the Royal Fish.
Following the polliwog to shellback ceremony there was a "flash mob" to send a get well message to a passenger's relative. Since it was announced by the Cruise Director, it wasn't much of a surprise "flash" event. The participants enjoyed it.
We arrive in Hilo with overcast skies and pouring rain.
Oceania had cancelled our ship's excursion to visit some waterfalls, not because of lack of precipitation to power them. We took advantage of a free shuttle from the port to Walmart where we stocked up on supplies like graham crackers and a new suitcase to replace the one that died at the hands of FedEx on its shipment to the ship back in January. The Walmart manager made back the cost of that bus shuttle since just about everybody on board made a Walmart trip sometime during the day. Especially the crew.
Oceania had told us there would be a shuttle to downtown Hilo from the port authority, but the bus had broken. Crystal Serenity was also in port, and they had arranged for a bus for their passengers. Oceania was left looking second class.
We took a taxi into town and walked around. Fortunately the rain had stopped temporarily.
I thought this was interesting. Here's the normal push button to activate the walk signal, with an additional push button located six inches from the ground. I'm not sure who that button is for -- do they have some savvy dogs that use their nose?
We always park near the container port.
