June 20 Acapulco

This was an on--off--on stop.  Before arriving in Los Angeles they told us that we would replace Acapulco with Puerto Vallarta.  Alternate trips and excursions were planned.  Then two days ago they said, "Never mind."  The concern was security, and apparently there was a change of heart.  In the actual event there were no problems.

The sail in to Acapulco was beautiful

There was a dance troupe to greet us.
We stayed with the ship's excursion for safety, choosing the most touristy one available.  Here's the Acapulco cliff divers, featured on ABC's Wide World of Sports in the dawn of the TV age.
They climb up from sea.
 and jump off
The cliff divers are now unionized, with pensions, health plan and vacations.  It wasn't like that when Jim McKay was here.

Here's the fort located just above the harbor we we parked Insignia.  It's now a museum.

Lots of VW Beetles driving around, many of them used as taxis.  Although they seem small, compared to the tuk-tuks we saw a couple of months ago, these seem like stretch limos.

 The Chapel of Peace

Los Flamingos Hotel, built by the Hollywood nobility of the '50s and used as their hideaway.
Back at the ship it was Mexican Fiesta night, with a Mexican buffet, complete with churros for the first time on the cruise.  The churros may have looked a little strange -- they were the size of a cocktail weiner -- but they tasted fine.  The cooks had a great time with decorations, taking a chicken and turning it into an entertainer.

A deck party with people actually dancing.  The flavor of the ship is definitely younger during this leg of the journey.  Maybe it's the group that came aboard in LA, or maybe the ATW people are less worried about breaking a hip by this stage of the journey.

We did a similar tour in 2002 and enjoyed the local color. We had a midnight sailaway, so the ship brought a folklore group and a mariachi band onboard ... lots of fun.

we all would have loved to have had more youth groups come aboard to sing, play instruments, and dance for us but we've not had very many.

We're told one reason is because of the security crackdown letting others come aboard. I know a relative of someone on board was denied entry to board for a couple of hours.
