May 23 second time, Pago Pago American Samoa
We crossed the International Date Line overnight, so we get a do-over of Monday May 23, although at a different Samoan Island.
Sail in with the sun shining
We board our fully air conditioned ("just lower the windows") coach, complete with palm frond decor, to tour the island.
A presentation using the "Science On A Sphere" at the Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary
A drive through town
Sadie Thompson Inn
Our tour guide Vernon, who was morbidly obese, and joked about it -- he would serve as the airbag in the event of an accident; his family had many good fishermen, he served as the float....
Samoa and American Samoa have the same customs and traditions. They were separated in a treaty between Germany and the US. Here's the same open meeting room for the family.
The rain didn't stop the locals from having a good time.
Driving back to town, this is Camel Rock.
A big tuna cannery contributes to the local economy and aroma
We walked through town.
A soggy square of vendors plying the cruise ship trade
We were really in the US -- an unincorporated and unrepresented territory.
Sail away, with the sun shining. The sun shines when you enter and leave. It rains the rest of the time.
Dance of the Tugboats
Joining in the dance, the pilot leaves our ship
The US flag comes down until we get to Hawaii.
