May 3 Cairns

We spent the evening of May 3 in Cairns because we didn't stop in Cooktown on May 3 as scheduled.  Cooktown would have been a tender port, and the seas were a little high, and predicted to go even higher during the afternoon.  The captain decided to skip the port and head directly to Cairns.  We arrived about 6PM, and got an evening in town before our early excursion the next day.

Going from Darwin to Cairns, this is the north end of Australia, the York Peninsula.  Miles and miles of empty space.

 Sunset in Cairns
We wandered the city as it became dark

We found the restaurant/bar we had first visited in 2005.  We ate a very good dinner there.
But this is the real reason we went back.  The men's restroom faces onto a courtyard at the back of the bar.  Since it's dark, you can't see the courtyard through the plate glass.  As you step up to urinate, a curtain of water comes down the plate glass, turning it translucent.  I failed to take a picture 11 years ago, so I'm glad I had another chance to get the picture.

Walking back to the ship, there was a group of trees very loud with birds.  It was very dark, and I used all of the ISO that the camera had to get this picture.
Stopped at the BWS store (beer, wine, spirits) which is part of the Woolworths grocery store (Woolies to the locals) and noted that they had a wine named for our ship.  Didn't buy any though.

A common sight at cruise terminals, the crew using the cruise terminal wifi.

My husband now wants to check out that pub ... but I think it's the men's room he is interested in seeing ;-)
