May 17 Napier

A few pictures from our aborted visit to Picton.  We got to within 5km of the port and then turned around and sailed back out.

Napier is known as the Art Deco city.  The city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1931 and was rebuilt in the then popular style known as Art Deco.  They play everything up for the tourists.  We were greeted at the dock by this dapper young man and his sporting machine.
Downtown it was Art Deco everywhere.

And vintage cars for the tourists.

We're trying to figure out what the leafy tree in the background is.  It has lots of red berries and none of the locals seem to know what it is.  We even asked one of the gardeners in the public park, and she was clueless.
Here's a closeup of the leaves and fruit of the unknown tree.  Might be a cotoneaster tree.

Along the Marine Parade, Pania of the Reef, a Maori legend.
