Ferry day! To get from Burlington WA to Lake Crescent Lodge inside Olympic National Park, wehave get to take a ferry. About an hour from our hotel the Coupeville to Port Townsend ferry runs. A 60-minute water ride saves about 4 hours of driving.
We cross from the mainland to Whidbey Island.
Others are waiting for the ferry.
It arrives and we follow the motorcycles into the car park area. It's foggy and drizzling, but stood on the sun deck for the short trip, just enjoying the ride. The guys who run the ferry know what they're doing...10 minutes to load everyone aboard, and we were on of the first ones off. An altogether enjoyable experience.
And it got better. By the time we reached the park the fog had burned off leaving a strikingly sunny day, particularly on top of Hurricane Ridge. At 5242 feet not a really big mountain, but it's within a hundred miles of the ocean. You can see across the straits to Victoria from there.
There's a tiny glacier still alive in the mountains there.
Tonight's hotel is Lake Crescent Lodge on the banks of Lake Crescent. The big lodge has a few guest rooms to go with the restaurant, but we stayed in one of the lakeside cottages. Somewhat primitive with no AC, TV or WiFi, but you couldn't beat the view.
