Sept 21 Montrose

Today we head towards our goal of Durango.  This was our first scheduled stop for this western trip before we fled from Hurricane Florence.  But instead of going directly to Montrose we drove over to Aspen to see how the rich live.

Courtyard doesn't have an included breakfast, so we went to Village Inn and saw these in the parking lot. Through the open side of the Jeep below you could see that the passenger was a complete skeleton.  Since there is an HOV lane on the drive to Aspen, perhaps this is one way to get 2 people aboard.

Lots of traffic on the the way to Aspen from Glenwood Springs.  There is a special HOV/Bus lane for much of the distance.  Of course, the rich and famous would take their private jet.  We didn't get a photo but there were more than 30 private jets parked along the fence of the airport.  In late September. No snow yet.

We retraced our steps out of town, then turned south for Montrose.  On the way to McClure Pass we encountered this -- about 50 coke ovens along the road.  They mined coal nearby and used these ovens to convert it to coke before shipping it our to the steelmakers.  For more information, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redstone_Coke_Oven_Historic_District
Across from the coke ovens, the Crystal River
