We had been to Memphis about 10 years ago as the starting/ending point of a Smithsonian Civil War Tour of the Battle of Shiloh. We decided to spend most of a day here as part of our revised travel out West.
We had no real plan for the city, other than to walk around. No interest in visiting Graceland, but the Loraine Motel and the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. was part of our youth.
Horse drawn carriage rides available, but we walked
Memphis has a nice tram system, but we needed the exercise after sitting in the car all morning.
BIRD scooters were all over Main St and Beale St. There were also bicycle rental racks, adn we even passed a ZipCar parking spot. Lots of ways to avoid walking.
Statue dedicated to the other King in Memphis, Elvis.
Anything you need, and many things you don't, are here at Schwab's
The ducks in the fountain of the Peabody Hotel. The lobby was full of people witting with their hand luggage nearby -- probably waiting for their rooms to be readied.
We went to Beale St to find dinner. Outside every restaurant there's a guy telling you that this place is the best.
We ate at the PIG ON BEALE. The ribs were heavenly. The sides were so-so (cole slaw, fries) but who cares. The pig died nobly for this meal.
As we were leaving the lights were showing in the fading sunlight.
And we walked back, even though a touch of Disney was available.

The famous balcony of the Lorraine Motel. There were posters blanketing the city remembering the 50th anniversary of the assassination.
On the right is the rooming house from which James Earl Ray shot. The rightmost small window is the bathroom from which the shot was fired. It's not as far away as I originally imagined -- less than 100 yards.Statue dedicated to the other King in Memphis, Elvis.
