Jan 18 -- At Sea

Since there's no port to visit, I though I'd take you on a tour of our stateroom.  It won't take long since it's only 216 sq ft.  I'm surprised at how easily we could fit 6 months of supplies into the room, and we probably could fit more.  No reason not to buy souvenirs.
The very comfortable king size bed takes up most of the space in the room.  Bayu comes and makes it every morning, and turns it down at night.  It also works well for napping.  One one side there are three large suitcases underneath, containing only items that are needed infrequently.  I left several shirts in the suitcase so I can refresh my wardrobe later on and not get tired of wearing the same thing every day.  Under the other side Cynthia purchased several plastic underbed storage containers, and they likewise have infrequent use items.  Cynthia sent her two empty suitcases into ship's storage. There are side tables on either side of the bed that hold socks and underwear, with books and clocks on top.

The bathroom has a medicine cabinet for normal daily use items.  In the corner opposite the shower there are several triangular shelves that contain our 6-month supply of shampoo, conditioner and other ointments.

In the entrance foyer, behind the door opening, is the big closet.  Life jackets on top, with some things stuck along the sides.  A good supply of hangars, and about 3 feet of rod to put things on.  At the bottom are some backpacks and shoebox containers.  Another great Cynthia idea was to bring along a hanging shoe holder.  But she has put T-shirts in the slots rather than shoes.

Next up is the smaller closet next to the big one.  IT has about 18" of hanger space, along with a shelf above.  Cynthia had the great idea of buying lots of shoebox containers from The Container Store.  Those boxes allow us to keep a variety of items convenient and still separated.  I have two boxes of photo equipment, and about 3 boxes of medicine and toiletries.  Cynthia has a similar collection of boxes for toiletries.  At the bottom of this closet are 4 spacious drawers in which I have placed shirts and shorts.

At the end of the cabinets is the tv and dvd player.  I've put some items on top of the dvd player for quick access -- things like the cell phones and point&shoot cameras.  Below the tv are two very large triangular openings, with 2 shelves in each -- about 18" on each side.  The top one contains the safe, the bottom is open.  We've got a lot of things in there, like rain gear alonside the safe, a shelf for sunscreen (we're being good Steve) and insect repellent.

Across the wall opposite the bed we used some of the magnetic clips and hooks that Cynthia had purchased.  We put up the daily newspaper -- Currents -- since it has all the times for things happening on the ship, and the daily menu for the sit-down main dining room.  On the other side of the mirror we have family pictures, tickets for shore excursions, and other items of interest.

The desk has the mini-fridge on the right and drawers on the left.  Cynthia has clothing stored there.  Atop the desk are the two computers and the recharging station for everything we have.  The desk has two 220-volt and two 110-volt outlets.  You have to leave one 220 outlet open so the room steward can plug in the vacuum, but you can use the rest.  I brought a triple outlet adapter for the other 220 outlet so we have plenty of outlets for all the charging needs.

You can see the table in front of the couch on which we've stacked yet another shoe box full of stationery supplies and documents (they still haven't asked for our completed Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar visas).  You can also see the verandah with two chairs and a table that is a great place to sit and watch the world go by.  You can also see the GPS unit in its case, tied to the chair.  I'm hoping for a complete instrument failure on the bridge so I can step up and show the way to port.  Not really...

And on the back of entry door we have another set of magnetic clips holding the weekly calendar I printed from my Google Calendar which shows lots of information -- arrival and departure times, shore excursions, dining reservations and even sunrise/sunset times.

We have the whole ship to roam around, but this is the part that we call home for the next 5 1/2 months.  Later on we'll cover the ship in more detail.

Thanks for sharing your photos. Both of you have done a masterful job in organization! One thing we do to get more room, is put the life vests under the bed. You might have that space filled however. I'm a CC lurker and have enjoyed following the many posts of the RTW folks. We are committed Oceania cruisers with many trips done and 2 more planned. I've also enjoyed your lovely pix of the ports visited so far. Keep up the good work!!

Aloha, Palakika (Francie)

Francie,

thanks so much for your kind words! We're having a blast on this trip. There were several shorex that came in late to the ship today from Belem/Amazon-Guama River sailing and the wonderful people in Terraces stayed open until 3:30 so we could get something to eat.

I told all of the white shirts how much we appreciated it and as we left i went to all of the food stations and told all of the crew that I really thought they were awesome...and they are!!

glad you're "sailing" along with us! cynthia

All of your organization reminds me of the "tiny house" stuff where people use every single nook and cranny to store things. Very impressive. Thanks for the tour of your room. And for using sunscreen. :)

Great ideas. I'm taking notes. We always take an over-the-door shoe thingie that we will with stuff other than shoes ... great way to utilize the back of the bathroom door ... will probably take a second one to put on the back of the cabin door.

Love the T-shirts in the shoe holder! I have looked on Amazon and don't see one...do you recall where you bought it? Thanks!
