Dec 19 - Sydney

We enjoyed the trip  Manly last time, so we decided to repeat it.  We may have had one day too many in Sydney, but Manly is a fun place to to the ferry we went.

You can't have too many pictures of the Opera House.  And to think that there was a long fight about building it.  Now it's the iconic image of Sydney, and perhaps Australia.
Fort Denison, just outside Circular Quay
 Another beautiful day in Manly.
Passing along the tradition of surfing.  Father instructing daughter.
 Lifesaving boat
Walked to the south this time, and around the corner towards Shelly Beach in the distant right of the picture.  About a kilometer.
 Teens
The Fairy Bower salt water pool along the way.  I just wanted to include the name.
A great innovation.  The runoff from the water fountain falls into a cup just the right height for your canine companion.  Water fountains were common along all our walks in Sydney, but this one was unique.
The beach was VERY crowded between the flags designating the safe swimming zones.  Otherwise it was just the surfers in the water.
Wall art at the Manly Life Saving Club.
 Ferry ride back
Not as many boats out as on the weekend
I think this is the Governor General's quarters, just north of Circular Quay
Luna Castle Park, just across the harbor bridge from downtown Sydney.  Actually saw the ferris wheel turning at times.
Here's where you tap in for the ferry with your Opal card.  Very convenient.
View from our table at Cafe Extra where we could watch the stream of people passing by.  At the very right edge of the picture is Wharf 3 with the yellow&green ferry docked there.  Our Ivy Busker set up shop by the green fence at the water line.
Later in the evening we were looking for Golden Hour pictures.  Here's the sunset illuminating the buildings on the north side of the harbor.
And they finally turned on the lights at the Opera House during Blue Hour after sunset.

The reason that it took so long to construct the opera house was that it was an architect with little knowledge of structural engineering who proposed the design. They went through a number of structural companies who kept suggesting modifications to make it more understandable to construct . Finally found an innovative person who figured out how to support all those curves!
