July 7 Lerwick

Our first visit to the Shetland Islands.  The weather was typical, grey, spitting rain at times, windy with a temperature of 12 (I believe that's Celsius, but based on the way it felt, it could have been Fahrenheit).

Lerwick harbor
The Shetlands Islands depend on ferries.  Northlink is the big one in the Lerwick Harbor, with strong links to Norway.
We took the coach tour of Western Shetland Island.  There are about 300 islands with a total population of ~23,000.

The Clickimin Broch, an ancient fortress
The famous Shetland ponies.  You'll have to take my word that they're small, we never passed any standing next to anything of normal size to compare them.
 Scalloway, famous for its castle
Fishing is a big industry here
Scalloway Castle built was built in 1600 with "forced labor" by Earl Patrick Stewart and was hated by all.  He eventually was taken to Scotland, tried, found guilty of many crimes, and was executed.

A two-fer, fishing nets and the castle

Shetland's only train station is a model train.  He built it outside because his wife wouldn't let him have it inside.
